Pro Tip Tuesday

August 26, 2015

Last week’s Pro Tip Tuesday from Red Chair Market features some tips from CDK Architects about how to bring natural light into spaces such as bathrooms and closets. Natural light is not only great for illuminating spaces, but is also scientifically proven to increase the health of building occupants.

Habitat for Humanity Global Village 2015 – Costa Rica

June 8, 2015

In May of 2015, Jen traveled to Costa Rica with Habitat for Humanity Global Village to help build a home for a family in need.

Costa Rica has a population of 4.5 million, and about 1.25 million of those people live in poverty. Habitat’s mission is to provide everyone with a decent place to live.

Jen traveled to a village in a region called Nicoya, where she met the family that she would be building a home for; the mother, Heilin (age 21), and her two daughters Brittany (age 7) and Brianna (age 2). Heilin became a single mother at age 15. She is currently taking computer classes so that she can work as a secretary. Currently Heilin and her daughters live with family members. There are 8 of them living in a tiny house, and it’s very crowded. Soon Heilin, Brittany, and Brianna will have a home of their own.

Jen and her teammates spent the week building the home’s foundation, walls, and septic system. Over the next three weeks the home will be completed by other Habitat volunteers.

These are some favorite photos from the trip.

Hearthside House – Semifinalist in Tiny House Design Competition

January 27, 2015

Recently, Jen Hill from CDK Architects teamed up with Jessie Pascarelli and Michael Endres of Nelsen Partners, Inc. to design a tiny house for the Tiny Victories Design Competition, a collaboration between AIA Austin and Mobile Loaves & Fishes. The winning homes will be built at the Community First! Village, a 27 acre master-planned community that will provide affordable, sustainable housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas.

Our home, Hearthside House, was one of the top 11 semifinalists! The 4 winners and 11 semifinalists will be featured in an exhibition at the Austin Foundation for Architecture‘s Form:Function event on February 26th. They will also be exhibited at a Luncheon Speaker Series featuring Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ CEO Alan Graham on February 17th and then will be in the Gallery at the Austin Center for Architecture.

Interested in building your own tiny house? Let us know – we can help!

Construction is almost complete at 3239 Glengarry Drive! The renovation is scheduled to wrap up in the next few weeks. We’re very happy with the results and are excited to share some preliminary photos. One key feature is a beautiful new steel and wood display case that was custom fabricated by Nieri Design. This display case will showcase the home owner’s collection of modern glass art and will allow the viewer to experience the art three-dimensionally. Stay tuned for post-construction photos coming soon!
